Graco Children's Products Announces Recall
DETROIT - Graco Children's Products said on Tuesday that it was recalling nearly 919,000 of its SnugRide child car seats because of the risk they could fly loose during an accident or sudden stop.
Metal hooks, used to anchor the "carrier" component of the car seats to
their base, may be missing, the company, a unit of consumer products
maker Newell Rubbermaid Inc., said in a statement.
"In the event of a sudden stop or crash, the carrier may detach from the base, possibly resulting in serious injury or death," the Elverson, Pennsylvania-based company said.
It said consumers with a SnugRide Infant Car Seat, manufactured in the United States between Aug. 31, 1999, and Feb. 28, 2002, should visit the Web site www.gracobaby.com to determine if it is among 918,930 affected by the recall.
Customers in the United States can also contact by telephone at 1-800-664-5246.
A company spokeswoman said no deaths or injuries had been reported in connection with the car seats, which have been sold at baby product stores in South America and Canada as well as the United States.
The recall of the child seats in the United States was being carried out in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In other countries, Graco said it would work with its distributors to ensure that the car seats are retrieved and fixed.
