In their effort to find missing 11-year-old Mikelle Biggs, Mesa police said Saturday they've asked about 10 homeowners to submit to voluntary property searches based on phoned-in tips from psychics. "Because it's a child, we're just not willing to put anything aside," police Detective Jose Martinez said.
"We get a bunch that say they're not psychic but had a dream, we're going to put it at the bottom of the pile (of tips). But if someone claims to be psychic and they're telling something that makes any kind of sense at all, we're going to check it out."
Mikelle disappeared Jan. 2, four houses away from her Mesa home. Police have received hundred of leads.
Darien Biggs, the girl's father, said the family has received several unsolicited calls from psychics.
"I don't think I would pay a psychic $3 a minute to help me get a better job, but in certain circumstances, they might be able to be helpful," he said. "I'm willing to try anything. If a psychic is responsible for finding Mikelle, then that's great."
In the suburban Tribune newspaper Saturday, police asked psychics to send in written responses to six questions surrounding Mikelle's disappearance.
Martinez said he has a few rules of thumb about determining the quality of a person's dealings with the ether.
"If they want to be on the news or want to give me their name, they're a little fishy," Martinez said. "Because usually the good psychics, they want to remain very anonymous."
